A journey through art and war
The Mantua area was often the scene of clashes and military events that disrupted northern Italy over the centuries. Always characterised by a fragile balance between land and water, this territory became part of fortified systems developed over time by different state entities based on renewed defensive needs and in relation to the constant evolution of the art of war.
However, it was the city of Mantua in particular that, due to its unique geographical conformation, assumed significant strategic and military value. Long protected by a simple wall only sporadically equipped with towers and bastions, the city was surrounded from its origins, as it still is today, by the waters of the River Mincio, which over the centuries would strengthen its defences, ensuring its impregnability and earning it a reputation as an invincible city. The itinerary therefore leads to the discovery of the city's military and defensive architecture.
